Why Inspire Crosswords?
The purpose of this endeavor is to celebrate the inspirational and often obstacle-defying contributions of Americans of African descent. To celebrate contributions both large and small since the arrival of the first Africans in colonial Virginia in the early 17th century up to the election of Barack Obama as the nation’s first Black president and beyond.
Many of the entries will celebrate historic achievements with a decided nod to those who paved the way for all who followed. Likely, most of the names will be well known while a few others may be a refresher. And still some others may be altogether new and thereby inspire a closer look, but we hope you will find the crossword puzzles enlightening as well as entertaining. Whether celebrating estimable inventors such as Garrett A. Morgan and Elijah McCoy or crusaders for justice like Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. Whether celebrating trailblazing sports icons such as Jackie Robinson and Althea Gibson, musicians and entertainers like Dizzy Gillespie and Dorothy Dandridge or pioneering giants in the field of medicine like Dr. Charles Drew and Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the hope is that you will find a degree of enrichment and enjoyment. Of course contemporary contributors to America and the world such as Jay-Z and Tupac, Rihanna and Alicia Keys, LeBron James and the Williams sisters will be prominently featured and celebrated as well. And thus we humbly ask you to join us on this journey.
